Red Bulls sign Thierry Henri

Red Bull New York announced today that it has signed star French forward Thierry Henry to a multi-year contract as its second Designated Player. Henry, a World Cup, European Championship and UEFA Champions League winner, will be available for selection for New York pending receipt of his International Transfer Certificate and after the July 15 international transfer window. His debut for the Red Bulls is expected to be on July 22 against English Premiership club, Tottenham Hotspur, in the Barclays New York Challenge at Red Bull Arena.

The former FC Barcelona, Arsenal, Juventus FC and AS Monaco striker known for his sublime technical ability, sharp acumen and nose for goal, most recently represented France in the World Cup for a record fourth time. Henry, a member of the 1998 World Cup-winning side and leading scorer, has scored a national-record 51 goals and earned 123 caps for his country. Henry also helped France win the 2000 European Championship and the 2003 Confederations Cup.

Greece’s austerity program is ahead of targets and will ensure the country will be able to honor its commitments, Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou said. Greece is “showing better performance on our spending reductions” and has performed “better than our target was for the first six months,” Papandreou said in a radio interview today on “Bloomberg on the Economy with Tom Keene.” (read more on Business Week)

Imaginative creatures of the sea attend the 2010 Mermaid Parade at Coney Island June 19, 2010 in the Brooklyn borough of New York City.The Coney Island Mermaid Parade takes place every year in Coney Island, New York in mid-to-late June. The Parade is a lively and welcoming ocean-themed event open to everyone.
The tradition of the Coney Island Mermaid Parade began in 1983, when the first event of this kind was conceptualized and organized by Dick Zigun, who is sometimes dubbed the “Mayor of Coney Island”, and who was the founder of the non-profit arts group Coney Island USA. The Mermaid Parade is held in celebration of the beginning of the summer season, and so it traditionally takes place on the Saturday closest to the calendar start of summer, regardless of the weather.

Protest in New York against aid ship deaths

Hundreds of New Yorkers took to the streets in Times Square to respond to recent attack on civilian aide boats by the Israeli army on May 31, 2010. The attack killed at least 10 people and injured many others. People marched around holding signs saying “free Gaza” and “Palestinians hunger for justice”. The group left Times Square in the afternoon and started marching, heading to the United Nations.
