VoW: Life After Coma by Luca Scabbia

février 14, 2011 by · Leave a Comment

Here’s a new era coming on this website (hopefully). I’ve recently been working a lot on different project, and it’s time now to revive this blog and propose a richer content. A couple of years ago, I’ve created a video-group on Vimeo called « Photojournalism & Multimedia« . Strangely enough, I created it and let it live its life until recently when I discovered that 86 members had uploaded almost 240 videos.

I immediately watched the whole content, some are very good, others not so, but there’s an energy and a will to share that I can’t be insensitive of.
So I’ve decided to feature once a week my top 3 videos from Vimeo, but specially from our « Photojournalism & Multimedia » group.

Here’s the video « Life After coma » by Luca Scabbia, according to him: « This is my first multimedia experiment from a photography assignment i shot in Italy about people in vegetative state after traumatic accident. »

For those who’d like to see the pictures, here’s a direct link to his website: http://www.lucascabbia.com/coma.html and here’s the pitch of the story:

Living beyond coma, in that border zone between semi-vegetative and vegetative state. In Italy there are about three thousand people who have suffered severe traumatic brain injuries, mostly caused by traffic accidents, who live today in this condition. The disabling outcomes are obvious, lives turned upside down, a whole new reality to rebuild. An issue of great importance to the Health and Social System in Italy, as in most industrialized countries.

In Ferrara there is a public facility, considered a center of excellence for rehabilitation from serious acquired brain injury; here begins the stories of those who faces the difficult path of awakening from a coma.A long and painful journey, which is nonetheless frequently punctuated by moments of hope, courage and dignity, equally shared by patients, their families and by the staff of psychologists, doctors and therapists. A journey combining professionalism and humanity, in the common goal of healing.

Stay tuned for more about webdoc (which is becoming to me i-doc, I’ll explain why), transmedia storytelling, interactivity and documentaries.
Cheers

Stay tuned.

I don’t usually show my publications for various reasons including the lack of motivation to run after a good copy of the print. But I saw this one on the Redux Picture’s blog I thought I could make an exception. For the record, I’m actually in Paris teaching videography to a bunch of student at the EMI-CFD, a school where you can learn the art of photo reporting, journalism etc. I should be back on track after that. Cheers

TimeScape.org is an ongoing project put together by Tom Lowe, 2010 Astronomy photographer of the Year.

This is production footage I shot over the summer for my debut film, « TimeScapes, » a modern portrait of the American Southwest. I used Canon and Red MX cameras.

I hurge you to follow the blog here which is really captivating (at least from my point of view) or follow the guy on twitter. This work is beyond inspiration and take you back to our fundamental roots, the sky, the stars, trees and nature.

The Dark Side of the Lens by Astray Films

DARK SIDE OF THE LENS from Astray Films on Vimeo.

I’ve discovered that beautifully crafted video created by photographer and bodyboarder Mickey Smith.
Smith  gives an insight view of his creative process and the world he is dealing with everyday: the ocean.
A very inspired piece where an subtle point of view is well served by an amazing light and a great picture. This video worth your time!
I have to say, I’m not sure whether or not I would have the courage to spend that amount of time in a freezing water to roll this movie, but this is always inspiring to see the result of passion and dedication for a craft turning in that kind of wonderfully done production.

More from Vimeo:

As well as documenting various voices and experiences across surf photography, Smith worked with Allan Wilson from the Astray Collective, who acted as Director of Photography on the project. Together they logged hours of footage across the Atlantic coastline, traveling around Ireland, Cornwall and Manchester. Shot in Super 16mm film, as well as groundbreaking work with Canon 5D mk11 Digital SLR, Smith also projected images of the huge walls of water within which he works, on to monster urban landscapes such as sky rises and castles in Manchester, as well as the cliff lines at his home of Ireland
